“Once one understands that a text message travels wirelessly as a stowaway within a control channel, one sees the carriers’ pricing plans in an entirely new light.”
The New York Times, December 29, 2008
Writing for The New York Times, Randall Stross has an excellent piece in today’s paper concerning the text-messaging businesses of major wireless carriers. Of note to consumers and investors, Stross writes, “The public assumes that the wireless carriers’ costs are far higher than they actually are, and profit margins are concealed by a heavy curtain.”
Not being a user of text messages (at least, not unless you text me first), I haven’t really focused on them, but I’m not surprised by Stross’ report…it merely confirms what most folks already think of the carriers. The full article deserves a read – check it out.
