Fool me once

“I’m not sure they [Republicans] have a lot of credibility when it comes to fiscal responsibility.”

Barack Obama, February 9, 2009 (The Wall Street Journal)

In a nutshell, there you have tidily summarized the Republicans’ biggest problem in their fight against the stimulus packages that have now passed through Congress.

It beggars belief that the party responsible for overseeing the largest expansion of government expenditure in history is now the party of fiscal rectitude.

It’s a shame. Congressional Republicans are making the right stand and, in some cases, the right arguments, concerning the stimulus package passing through Congress, but President Obama is exactly right – they have no credibility on the issue. It seems congressional Republicans only find their collective voice of fiscal responsibility in opposition.
