Add a name to lore

I thought of writing a column beginning "Zachary, Stallard, Downing..." but then discovered that Tim Kurkjian of ESPN more or less beat me to it.

These are the names of pitchers who gave up legendary home runs. Tom Zachary gave up Babe Ruth's 60th home run in 1927; Tracy Stallard will forever be remembered as Roger Maris' 61st victim (breaking Ruth's single-season record). Al Downing gave up Hank Aaron's 715th home run, again breaking the Babe's record, this one for career home runs.

With Barry Bonds one home run shy entering today of breaking Aaron's record for home runs in a career, it was inevitable. And the winner is...

Mike Bacsik of the Washington Nationals. Congratulations, Mike. Even should your career flame out in anonymity, there's always Number 756 to keep you in the record books. And my, what a large asterisk you have!
